Acquisition of Land from Orange County, Virginia Records:

  • Pages 96-100. 26-27 June 1742. Benjamin Borden of Orange County to James Eakins of same. Lease and release; for ₤1.13.8 current money. 522 acres 3 rood, part of 92,100 acres of land pattin (patented) 6 Nov. 1739... corner to Robt. Dunlap's land... near the head of the spring... side of a narrow dry meadow... (signed) Benja. Borden. Wit: Samll. Dunlap, Robt. Dunlap, John Moore. 26 Aug. 1742. Acknowledged by Benjamin Borden, Gent. [Orange County Virginia Deed Book 8, Dorman, pg. 72].

  • Page 179.--2d November, 1768. John Eakin and Elizabeth, his wife, and James Eakin and Anne Eakin, of Bedford, £120, 261 acres, part of Borden's 92100 acres, corner Andrew and Samuel Eakin. Teste: John, James and Mathew Lyle. (Note: John and James Eakins listed in this record were sons of James Eakins, Sr., who had died a few years prior).

James Eakin's will--To wife Agness; to daughter Mary; to son John, 30 acres that John's uncle Walter formerly lived on; to daughter Margaret; to son James; to young sons Andrew and Samuel; testator's brother, Walter Eakin, and Jno. Wardlaw. Teste: Jno. Wardlaw, Jno. Montgomery, Jno. Eakin. Executors, Agnes Eakin, Mathew Huston.
  • Page 388.--19th March, 1765. Executors above qualify, and will proved by the witnesses. Sureties, Wm. Lockridge, James Henry. (Note: James Eakin's son John married Elizabeth Lockridge, daughter of William Lockridge, nephew of the William Lockridge that acted as surety in the record above. The Eakin family seemed to have a close relationship with the Lockridge family).

  • Vol. 2 - James Young vs. Eakin--O. S. 148; N. S. 51--Bill, 23d February, 1808. Complainant was son-in-law of Andrew Kennedy (of Rockbridge?). James Aiken bought land from Borden, Sr. (died in Orange), devised (will in Augusta) it to son John 30 acres which his uncle Walter formerly lived on, to son James, to sons, Andrew and Samuel. John and James (before Andrew and Samuel came of age)conveyed to a distant relation, Anne Aiken. Ann sold to George Weir, father of Thomas Weir, who conveyed to orator. Andrew Aiken is dead, also James Aiken. Thomas Weir lives in Tennessee. Ann Eakin was widow of Walter. Margaret Pollax deposes: Was daughter of John Aiken. Thomas Beard was father-in-law of George Weir. James Houston deposes: He was born in 1751. William Alexander deposes in 1769 he heard his grandfather Thomas Beard say. George Weir's will of Rockbridge, dated 8th August, 1781. Wife, Jean; sons, Thomas; children. Recorded in Rockbridge, 6th November, 1781.
