Emily Moss was born on 14th August 1861 at Caddington, daughter of a bonnet sewer called Catherine Moss, formerly Warren, and her husband William Moss, an agricultural labourer. Caddington parish straddled Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire at the time, and the family lived at Tipple Hill in the Hertfordshire part of the parish. Emily was the third of five children. In September 1864, when Emily was only three years old, her mother died of consumption, aged 26. Emily's baby sister Esther died the following month, and her older sister Mary died the month after that. In 1865 Emily's father remarried, and Emily had nine half-siblings from her father's second marriage.
The 1871 census finds Emily living with her maternal grandmother and her late mother's sister and her family at Aley Green. Emily was still living with her grandmother at Aley Green in 1881, by which time was working as a bonnet sewer machinist.
In 1883, Emily had a daughter called Lizzie. She was followed in 1887 by a son called Horace.
On 28th December 1889, aged 28, Emily married a straw hat blocker called Frederick Allen, who was from the nearby village of Markyate. They went on to have another six children together between 1890 and 1900, with the youngest two being twins.
The 1891 census finds the family living at Aley Green in the parish of Caddington, very close to Markyate. Frederick was working as a straw hat blocker, whilst Emily was a bonnet sewer. By 1901 they had returned to Markyate, settling on Hicks Road there (or Hicks Lane as it was called in 1891). In 1911 Emily reported that she had had nine children, one of whom had died, suggesting there was another child who has yet to be identified. Emily's father died a few days after the 1911 census in the neighbouring town of Luton.
Emily's son Horace was killed in action in France during the First World War in 1917.
Emily died in 1934, aged 73. Frederick survived her by eight years.
