Facts and Events
Florence Allen was born in 1890 (or thereabouts - see note on birth registrations) at Aley Green in the part of the parish of Caddington which was then in Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of a straw hat sewer named Emily Allen, formerly Moss, and her husband Frederick Allen, a hat blocker. Florence appears in the 1891 census living with her parents and siblings at Aley Green. In the mid-1890s the family moved down the hill to the next village of Markyate, where they appear in the 1901 census living at Hicks Lane. Florence has yet to be researched after 1901.

Florence's baptism record (from some time after 1892) apparently records a date of birth in 1889. However, in the 1891 census she was said to be 11 months old, suggesting she was born in April or May 1890. As the census is the earlier record, this is more likely to be accurate. Further work needed to establish which is the correct birth registration.
