Lizzie Allen was born in 1883 as Lizzie Moss at Aley Green in the part of the parish of Caddington which was then in Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of a straw hat sewer named Emily Moss. When Lizzie was about six years old her mother married a hat blocker named Frederick Allen, and all Lizzie's appearances in the censuses refer to her as Lizzie Allen and record her as being Frederick's daughter.
Lizzie appears in the 1891 census living with her parents and siblings at Aley Green. In the mid 1890s the family moved down the hill to the neighbouring village of Markyate, where they lived at Hicks Lane. The 1891 census shows Lizzie working as a straw hat sewer. She has yet to be researched after 1901.
