Frederick Allen was born on 17th February 1863 at Markyate, son of a straw hat sewer called Hannah Allen, formerly Harbon, and her husband George Allen, a straw hat blocker and bricklayer. Markyate village at this time straddled several parishes and two counties, and it seems most likely that Frederick was born in the section of the village which was in the parish of Caddington in Hertfordshire, based on where his siblings were born and where the family lived in the censuses. Markyate would not become a civil parish in its own right until 1897.

Frederick appears in the 1871 census living with his parents and siblings on the High Road in Markyate, described as a sewer's son. He was baptised at Markyate in 1873, aged ten, alongside three of his siblings.

The 1881 census finds the family living on Windmill Lane in Markyate, and both Frederick and his older brother Amos were described as ginger beer makers.

On 28th December 1889, aged 26, Frederick married Emily Moss at Caddington. She already had two children, to whom Frederick became stepfather. Frederick and Emily went on to have another six children together between 1890 and 1900, with the youngest two being twins.

The 1891 census finds the family living at Aley Green in the parish of Caddington, very close to Markyate. Frederick was working as a straw hat blocker, whilst Emily was a bonnet sewer. By 1901 they had returned to Markyate, settling on Hicks Road there (or Hicks Lane as it was called in 1891).

Frederick's stepson Horace was killed in action in France during the First World War in 1917.

Emily died in 1934, aged 73. Frederick survived her by eight years. At the outbreak of the Second World War he was living at Hicks Road in Markyate with his daughter Annie and her family. Frederick died in 1942, aged 79.

Baptised same day as siblings Charles, Emma and Henry. Although top of page says baptisms in the parish of Caddington, start of book makes clear that this register belongs to the chapel of St John's at Markyate rather than the parish church of All Saints at Caddington. Markyate did not become a separate civil parish until 1897.

    d. Frederick ALLEN, December Quarter 1942, Hemel Hempstead Registration District, Volume 3a, page 1294, aged 79 [1862/3]

Place of death given as Markyate on basis that it was in the Hemel Hempstead registration district at the time and as Frederick lived most of his life in or near Markyate quite likely that he would have died there too - death certificate would need to be obtained to confirm place of death.

  9. The Frederick Allen whose birth was registered in the March Quarter of 1864 in St Albans district is not this person - the births index shows that the 1864 child's mother's maiden name was Barker, which fits with the Frederick son of Joseph Allen and Eliza Allen formerly Barker, who can all be found in the 1871 census living at Sandridge.
