Mary Moss was baptised on 29th April 1860 at Caddington in Bedfordshire. She was the second child of a bonnet sewer named Catherine Moss, formerly Warren, and her husband William Moss, an agricultural labourer. Mary appears in the 1861 census living with her parents, older sister, paternal grandmother and her grandmother's husband at Tipple Hill in the Aley Green area of Caddington parish. Mary's parents went on to have another three children after her: Emily in 1861, James in 1862 and Esther in 1864.

On 26th September 1864, Mary's mother Catherine died from consumption, aged 26. Baby Esther was only about three or four months old at the time and did not long outlive her mother, dying on 29th October 1864. Three weeks later, on 18th November, Mary also died, aged four years old. She died of a fever and pneumonia. Her father had therefore lost his wife and two of his five children in the space of less than two months. Mary was buried at Caddington on 22nd November 1864.
