In September 1864, when Esther was only three or four months old, her mother Catherine died from consumption, aged 26. Esther was baptised three days after her mother's burial. Baby Esther did not long outlive her mother, being buried on 2nd November 1864 at Caddington, aged five months. Her cause of death was given as "burn of the breast" and convulsions.
