No marriage date as yet discovered, but the oldest child listed on 1850 census was born about 1834. We have learned that there was one child who died in infancy, but don't know just when it was born. On the 1840 census, we see a John Strohl listed as head of household in Laurel Twp., Hocking Co., Oh. There are one male 30-39, one female 20-29, one male age 5-9, one male 0-4, and three females 0-4.[p 182]

In the estate of her father, John A. Rittgers, dated 4 Apr 1848, we find in the accounting that, in the "debts owed the estate," "John Strohl & Isaac Root ... for five dollars dated August 29th 1846, due five months after date, supposed to be good."
On the 1850 census in Laurel, John is a farmer, age 40, and born in Pa. Wife Elizabeth is 35. The first ten children, as listed below are on the census. It is reported here that she b. Pa., but we have no evidence that the Rittgers family ever lived in Pa. [p 28, fam #405/414] On 1860 census we find John Strohl, age 57 (?) and has the last 8 children with he and Elizabeth. He has $400 worth of real estate and $400 in personal estate. Wife Elizabeth is 46 and born in Ohio[?]. [p. 156 fam #983/971] In 1870 John, now listed as 67, values his property at $2600 and personal property at $100. Elizabeth is 53 and with them is George W., 17; Lucinda, 16; and Rosa age 14. [p 489, fam #212/212] They have lived in Laurel Twp., Hocking Co., Oh., on all the census records. On Plat maps of the Ohio River Survey, Congressional Lands, we find that John Strohl purchased two adjacent plots of 34.89 and 34.78 acres each. On 30 Nov 1836, at the time of the first purchase, he is listed as living in Fairfield Co. On 26 Dec 1836 he purchased the second and was listed as being of Hocking Co.[Kocher, Survey Maps] No death date for Elizabeth has been found to date.
We believed that John's death was recorded in the Ohio Gen. Soc., THE REPORT, Spring 1990, Vol 30, #1, p. 26, Early Hocking Co., Undertakers Records, where we see one - John "Stroll" 9 Apr 1872, $15.00.(probably amount paid to the undertaker) We were comfortable with this until we received an e-mail from a Strohl researcher who has the obituary of one John A. Strohl, who died in Nebraska 9 Jan 1898! John Strohl is a common name in our Ohio area, so this may well be another John.
From the obituary, with no newspaper banner: John Strohl was born in Pennsylvania on September 14, 1802 of Dutch {here the person contributing the information entered "should have been German put here." The Germans of that time often referred to themselves as Deutch - pronounced Doitch - thus the confusion. JR} The Star of Emigration moved Westward and he followed to Ohio, then to Illinois, from there to Iowa, then to Nebraska where he died January 9, 1898 in the 96th year of his life. During his life in Ohio he and his wife opened their house as a place of worship and joined the Methodist church. His wife has long since passed to the Great Beyond. To him and his wife were born fourteen chidlren; eight sons and six daughters. One died young and the others lived to be men and women and married. At the time of his death there were seventy nine grand chidlren and thirty six great grandchildren. John is buried in the Almeria Cemetery, in land he gave the town for a cemetery.
There is a Strohl Town in Loup Co., Neb., where we found several of the known descendants of John and Elizabeth residing.
We thank Frances M. Robertson for sending in the descendants of John and Elizabeth (Rittgers) Strohl.
