John Amspaugh was the son of Conrad and Susana (__) "Amspacher". [Bates, Marlene S.; York Co. Church Records of 18th Cent., 1991.] Conrad b. Nov 1775 in Pa., d. 13 Sept 1864, Fairfield Co., Oh. Susana b. 15 May 1778, d. 22 July 1825, Fairfield Co., Oh. [deaths from Cemeteries of "Liberty Twp., Fairfield Co., Oh. " Fairfield Chapter, Oh. Gen. Soc.] We found a tombstone in the St. Paul's Church Cemetery, North Berne, showing one Susanna Amspaugh in the same row as John and Catherine (Comer) Rittgers, with only "Elizabeth, daughter of Conrad & Susannah Amspaugh, d. 28 Sept 1845, age 34" and two infant stones marked "Durr" between them.

John "Amspacker" paid for his father-in-law's coffin, 24 Feb 1848. In records of St. Jacobus Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rushcreek Twp., Fairfield Co., Oh., we find a notation that "Johan Amspach died 10 Mar 1848, 47 yrs, 3 mo." [transcribed by Fairfield Co. Gen. Soc.; p. 81.] (This gives us a birth date of 10 Dec 1800. JR) This was a very difficult time for Katherine, as she lost both father and husband within a few months. There is a note in the estate file for her father that she was paid one dollar for "washing & cleaning up the clothes beds, room, and [some sort of mark] of the said deceased after his death."
On the 1850 census, Marion Twp, Hocking Co., Katherine Amspaugh, age 41, with no husband listed. The eight children listed on census agree with family record.[p 6, fam #182/187] Katherine married (2) Peter Wagoner, Sr., 16 Feb 1854 in Hocking Co., Ohio.[Hocking Co., Oh., Marr. Bk B, p. 202] He was born 1793 in Germany. Peter died 10 Dec 1876 in Marion Twp, Hocking Co., Oh. [St. Jacobus Churchbook, Fairfield Gen. Soc., p. 81.] The 1860 census shows us that Peter Wagoner, age 67 and born in Germany, a farmer, has wife Catherine, age 52, born in Germany. (we will see how many times the census is in error, and this is one.JR) Four children in the home. [p.156, fam #1006/994] George has brought one son, George, to the home. The rest of his children are grown, including son Peter, who married Elizabeth, daughter of John Rittgers, Jr. (#13.6)
On the 1870 census, Marion, Hocking Co., Oh., we see Peter, 76, farming land he values at $1800. He and wife Katherine, 70!?!, value their personal possessions at $400. Amspaugh daughters Elizabeth, 27, and Lydia, 23, are still in the home.[p 493 fam #25/26] In records of the St. Jacobus Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rush Creek Twp., Fairfield Co., Oh., we find on page 81; "Katharina Wagner previously Amspach, daughter of Johann Augustinus Richers, b. 22 Nov 1807, Bpt. in her youth. Confirmed by Pastor Johannes Wagenhals. In year 1825 married Johann Amspach who died in 1848. They had 11 children. [We have found 9 children, the others may have died in infancy.] In 1854 she married for the second time 18 Feb (1854) Peter Wagner. [Katherine] D. 13 Apr 1871, age 63 yr., 4 mon., and 22 da." Another entry tells us "Peter Wagner d. 10 Dec 1876, age 83 yr., 7 mo., 2 da." Amspaugh has been interpreted on the records as "Amsbaugh", Amspacher", "Amspach", to name a few alternative spellings. In data taken from the internet, and not identified, as I couldn't reach the person submitting it, I find that the "Amspacher's" were in Pa. in 1727. The immigrant ancestor appears to be John George Hamspacher.
