Facts and Events
Cora Ann Dugger was born 12 Apr 1773 (what is the source for this date?), in Surry Co., NC. That area became Wilkes County shortly after her birth. Cora Ann was named as a child of Benjamin Dugger by John Preston Arthur in his 1915 book A History of Watauga County, North Carolina on page 303. He listed here as "Cora Ann, who married Samuel Burns." On 12 Feb 1791 Samuel "Burnes" obtained a marriage bond in Wilkes Co., NC to marry Ann Duggar. Benjamin Dugger was the bondsman. Samuel "Barnes" is listed on the 1800 census in Ashe Co., NC. It is possible this is them or it might be someone else:
They weren't listed in Ashe Co., NC in 1810. They were probably in neighboring Carter Co., TN then. The 1810 census is lost for Carter. Samuel Burns was listed on the 1815 tax list in Ashe Co., NC as a landowner. They were probably in Carter Co., TN for the 1820 census, but that census is lost. Samuel Burns was listed on the 1830 census in Carter Co., TN near many of Cora's Dugger cousins:
Samuel Burns was on the 1840 census in Johnson Co, TN just a couple of houses from Cora's brother Joel Dugger.
It appears that Samuel Burns and wife Cora Ann Dugger Burns both died before 1850 in Johnson Co., TN. "Anna Burns" is listed on the 1850 census mortality schedule in Johnson Co., TN as having died in Nov 1849, age 76, born NC, a seamstress and a widow. She died of an affliction of the spine which she had four months. |
