Facts and Events
Mary Dugger was born ca 1778/1779 per her age on the 1850 census, or ca 1771/72 per her age on the 1860 census. She was named as one of Benjamin Dugger's children in A History of Watauga County, North Carolina by John Preston Arthur. 1915, page 303 as "Mary, who married John CALIHAN." Nothing else was said about her there. On 13 Oct 1802 Thomas Foster, Joel Duggar and Mary Duggar witnessed a deed from Benjamin Dugger of Ashe Co., NC to Martin Hall. (Wilkes Co., NC Deed Book C1 page 435). Mary married John Callahan at some point, probably in Ashe Co., NC or perhaps in Rutherford Co., NC where they lived at least by 1817. On 12 Aug 1817 William McKinney obtained a marriage bond in Rutherford Co., NC to marry Betey Dugger (Mary's sister Elizabeth Dugger). J. Callihan and Willis McKinney were bondsman. J. Callihan is probably John Callahan. I wasn't able to find them on the 1820 census. They were on the 1830 census in Rutherford Co., NC. (I haven't been able to find this entry again, can anyone find it to verify?)
My notes show that John Callahan was listed on the 1840 census in Rutherford Co., NC, but I can't find the original census entry to confirm it. I wasn't able to find them elsewhere in 1840 either. They were in Gilmer Co., GA for the 1850 census.
Mary is on the 1860 census in Rutherford living with her son William (listed as Drury by mistake). John seems to have died before then. |
