There is a will of Colin Robert Dunlop, of Quarter Iron Works, resident at 12 Randolph Crescent, Edinburgh and Torwood Hill, Row, Dunbartonshire; he died 25jan1896 at Row (Scottish National Archives). Colin, of the Clyde Ironworks, took over the mineral fields in Quarter, Lanarkshire in about 1854 and developed the Ironworks. According to obituaries of sons James William and William Hugh Dunlop, Colin lived at Fullarton House, Lanarkshire. Colin’s nephew George James Dunlop (b. 20oct1849) lived at Fullarton House, Old Monkland, in 1881 (census). In 1851 Colin R. Dunlop (b.1817 Edinburgh) iron and coal master and sons George (b.1843 Old Monkland) and Colin (b.1845 Old Monkland) lived at Fullarton House, Clyde Ironworks, Old Monkland (census). In 1861 Colin R. Dunlop lived with his children, all born in Old Monkland: Mary Sophia (b.1854), James W. (b.1855), Colin (b.1855?), Robert (b.1858), and William Hugh (b. 1858) at Milton Lockhart, Carluke, Lanarkshire (census). Milton Lockhart was owned by the family Lockhart of Wicketshaw and Milton Lockhart, who had connections with the family Maxwell of Dargavel (see Frances Maxwell, 1815-1889). In 1878 Colin lived at Garnkirk House (Old country houses of the old Glasgow gentry, subscription list). Colin R. Dunlop, b. 1817 at Edinburgh, ironmaster, wife Helen B. Dunlop, b. 1831 at Glasgow, son George Dunlop, ironmaster, b. 1843 at Old Monkland, daughter Mary S. Dunlop, b. 1854 at Old Monkland, and 6 servants (in house and 6 on the estate) lived at Garnkirk Mansion, Cadder. Lanarkshire in 1881 (census). According to "who was who" and his will, Colin lived at Torwood Hill, Row, Dunbartonshire. From “The Burgesses and guild brethren of Glasgow 1751-1846” (Scottish record society, 1935): reg. 10 mar 1841 - Colin Robert Dunlop, merchant, as younger son to George Dunlop, Burgess and guild brethren. Glasgow PO Directory 1841 lists Colin R. Dunlop, 19 John St., house Clyde Iron Works. In 1855 Colin Dunlop and Co., ironmasters and manufacturers, had the address 97 West George St., Glasgow (Slater’s directory). According to his will and PO directory, Glasgow 1889, referring to Colin Dunlop and Co., he also lived at 12 Randolph Crescent, Edinburgh. Portraits of Colin Dunlop of Carmyle (1706-1777), Virginia merchant, and his wife Martha Bogle or Dunlop of Hamilton Farm, painted by Gavin Hamilton, were lent to Old Glasgow Exhibition 1894 by Colin R. Dunlop. A portrait of James Dunlop of Garnkirk (1741-1816 Tollcross), spouse of Marion Buchanan, was lent to Old Glasgow Exhibition by Colin R. Dunlop (catalogue). ▼References
