James married first Janet Donald, his 2nd cousin. Their great grandparents were Colin Dunlop of Carmyle (1706-1777) and Martha Bogle. James Dunlop of Tollcross and Rosebank took over Clyde Ironworks from his uncle Colin Dunlop (b. 1775, d. unm 1837) who was an M.P and whose will is at National Archives of Scotland. Scottish Archives have the will of James Dunlop of Tollcross, near Glasgow, died 19feb1893 at Glasgow, reg. 23mar1893 Glasgow.
In 1851 James Dunlop (b. 1812 Edinburgh), coal and iron merchant, Janet (b. 1819), Jane Mary (b. 1848), George Jas. (b. 1850) and Isabella Georgiana (b. 1851) lived at Tollcross House, Shettleston, Mary Donald (b. 1824) was a visitor (census). James Dunlop, coal and ironmaster, b. 1812 at Edinburgh, and daughters Isabella G. Dunlop, b. 1851 at Shettleston, and Jane M. Dunlop, b. 1853 at Shettleston, and 7 servants (in house and 9 servants or members of servant's families on estate) lived at Tollcross Mansion House, Shettleston in 1881 (census). In 1890 James Dunlop lived at Tollcross; James Dunlop and Co. Ltd., iron and coal masters and fire brick manufacturers, Clyde Iron works by Tollcross, had an office at 175 West George St. (PO directory).
