William died in a London nursing home of a heart attack, aged 67, 28nov1924. He was at Cheltenham College and entered the Army from the 2nd Lanark militia in 1879. In 1881 he served in the…expedition against the Ashantis, and from 1893-7 he was adjutant of the 4th Royal Irish Rifles…In 1899 he retired from the Army on his appointment as chief Constable of the East Riding of Yorkshire…Major Dunlop was a strict disciplinarian but his officers and men were devoted to him in no ordinary degree, for his kindheartedness was as conspicuous as his sense of justice….He was a keen sportsman (shooting, fishing, golf)…He married in 1893 Elisabeth Georgina, daughter of William Donald of Lisle House, Cheltenham and he leaves a son and a daughter, the former being Capt. Donald Dunlop of the Seaforth Highlanders, now stationed in India (Times). William lived latterly at Beverley, Yorks, but was probably not born in Yorkshire (see Who was who). William Hugh Dunlop's 2nd wife was Elizabeth Georgina Donald, his 3rd cousin; their great great grandparents were Provost Colin Dunlop of Carmyle (1706-1777) and Martha Bogle. References
