Times obituary: Colonel James William Dunlop, C.B., C.M.G., late R.H.A., died 20nov1923. He belonged to the ancient family of Dunlop of Lockerbie House, Dumfriesshire…He passed into Woolwich from Cheltenham College, and received his 1st commission in 1875. He was soon on active service in the Afghan war of 1879-80….His next service was with the Burmese Expedition in 1886-7. In the South African war he….received the C.B….and having been promoted to Colonel retired in 1908. On the outbreak of the European war (WW1) he rejoined and served throughout, being again mentioned and receiving the C.M.G. Col. Dunlop was a good sportsman, being particularly fond of hunting and shooting (Times). He may have died at Struan, St. Boswells, Roxburghshire, but was probably not born there (see Who was who).
