Personal History

Charles Anderson,[1] (first) son of Francis Anderson, Esq., and Eleanor[1] (Carter), was born on 3 February 1748/9, and he was baptized on 20 February in the parish of Broughton (by Brigg), Lincolnshire, England.[1]

In 1760, his great-uncle Charles Pelham devised and bequeathed his real estates to Charles, his assigns, and heirs-male, and appointed him executor of the last will and testament. He also willed that Charles and all persons coming into possession of the real estates would use the surname of Pelham. On 26 March 1763, with the younger Charles still being a minor, administration of the estate was granted to his uncle and guardian Charles Anderson (who was nephew of the testator and only brother to the heir's father). After attaining the age of 17 years and taking the surname of Pelham after Anderson by royal licence, the heir appeared before the Surrogate on 30 July 1770, at London, to give oath to prove the will and be granted administration.[9]

On 24 February 1771,[5] Charles was appointed sheriff of Lincolnshire by King George III.

On 8 May 1777,[8] Charles was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS).

On 12 August 1794,[4] the King granted to Charles and the heirs-male of his body the dignity of a Baron in the peerage of the Kingdom of Great Britain, and Charles was created Baron Yarborough of Yarborough, in Lincolnshire.
