Benzie Banner; 1936 ---- Researched; Aug. 2000 Oct. 22,- "Another Big Pike Chought Here By Local Fisherman" "Pg. 1" Local pike records were topped Monday when "Cap" Alton Long Landed a pike at the Betsie Pond that measured 42 inches in length and swung the scales to an even 21 pounds. The prize fish was hooked in the upper waters of the power dam pond near Freds Landing. The huge pike leads the one taken in Crystal Lake by Ed Reddick in August by a half a pound in weight an inch in length. It is understood Long will enter his prize in the verious big fish contests of the sporting magazines. An unusual angle of the event was disclosed in the fact the when opened the pike was found to contain three large fish, a sucker weighing two pounds and measuring17 inches in length, and two redhorse of about one pound each. Not satisfied with this load of food, the pike went with much vigor after the four inch minnow Long was using for bait. Long made the catch with a cane pole and the simplest type of hook, line and sinker tacle. Entry date; Nov. 3, 2000 Benzie Banner; 1944 ---- Researched - 1999 Nov. 23,- Alton Long Dies From Injuries .--------- Alton Long , 42, of Benzonia died early last Friday morning at the Frankfort Hospital as a result of injuries received the day before while at work in his barn . Mr. Long was found laying in the barn yard Thursday afternoon very badly bruised and in semi conscious state . He apparently had been working about his horses in the stable when one of them kicked and trampled him . His boots were found laying in the stable under the horse's hoofs and near by was a goat which was in the habit of following Mr. Long about when he was at work in the barn . The goat had been kicked evidently at the same time that Mr. Long received his injuries . The injured man was carried into the house and as soon as a doctor could arrive was taken from there to Frankfort Hospital where he died some hours later . Death was due to skull fractures and chest injuries . Mr. Long was the son of Mr. & Mrs Adam Long and had always lived in the community . Besides his parents he is survived by his wife and two children . He is also survived by three brothers and four sisters , William , Harvey , and Lloyd , Mrs. Eric Porter , Mrs. Orlie Priest , Mrs. John Priest , and Mrs. Arthur Clark , all of Benzonia and Beulah. The funeral was held at Bennett Funeral Home in Frankfort Monday afternoon with Rev. Dutton of the Benzonia Congreational Church performing the service . Burial was made in the Benzonia Twp. Cemetery. |
