[edit] Oral Traditions(Excerpts from Gary Miller's letters to Vera Bastin) Thursday 9 February 1978 She (Alma) said that as long as she was an only child, her father doted on her, taking her to work (she loved to smell the sawed wood). John would call her "kid". When Thelma was born, Alma felt rejected. Later, in school, I think mother said she didn't get along well with the other children. One day she brought a girl friend home, and then proceeded to go into the bedroom alone, until her mother Mary came and asked her why she wasn't socializing with her friend. I don't remember what the outcome was. Actually she said she preferred not to go to school at all. In fact, her father didn't let her go to school often-times, so she said, so that Alma could help with chores like tending cattle on horseback! When did Grandpa Miller ever have cattle, or did they belong to someone else? Alma said that she really liked tending them. Mother also said that she remembered when she came (with her folks, surely) in a covered wagon from Nebraska to Kansas. I think she said that they came from Champion, Nebraska. How long did John and Mary live in Nebraska and I when did they move to Kansas? Image Gallery
