Oral Traditions

Vera Bastin told to Donald Bastin 10/27/1997 I have some memories of my life when I lived in this house (The little house close to the schoolhouse in Brewster). I remember once I found a chocolate bar or candy in the cupboard and I don't know how many times I searched that cupboard for a repeat, but in vain! One day I remember my little brother, Wayne, had cut his elbow on a tin can. Somehow the blame was placed on me for sending him to met the can. To this day, I remember I felt unjustly accused of something I didn't do. And another memory - I wasn't in school yet, but had wandered over to the playground and was on a swing, blissfully ignorant that school was in session. Suddenly this teacher descended on me (Miss McCall), swatted me on the behind and said "You know you aren't supposed to be here." I was one terrified little girl! I think that was a very cruel act.

The house across the tracks in the south part of Brewster.

There is a special memory connected with this part of my life. I will have to put this together as I think it must have happened. There is this little girl (Vera) carrying this quite heavy puppy (for me anyway) to her new home. I remember setting him down by the theater to rest a bit. I must have gotten him home, and I think this must have been "Shep". We must have left him at our old place and I happened to recognize him and brought him home. I have always loved animals.
