Freda also related to me (Vera Bastin) about the fire that destroyed our home at the Allbright farm where we lived, ca 1926. I have no memory of this. Dad must have been doing very well. We had horses and cattle and Dad farmed. The only real Christmas Freda recalls was when the family lived on this farm. Uncle George and Dad had us kids go upstairs so that Santa could come. She remembers that Harold got a red wagon, and that she got a doll. I understand that all of us kids got something when we came down. Wish I could remember what I got. Did I get a doll? I hope so! Well, anyway, Uncle Tony's son Lloyd and his wife, Donna were living upstairs. Donna was very young left the oil stove on upstairs and came downstairs. Dad and Mom (and I wonder - maybe Wayne and me - or were we home?) had gone to see Dad's sister's husband, (Minnie Miller Carpenter's husband) who was ill. Well, while they were gone. the house burned. Dad had even gotten a new range for Mom. What a catastrophe this must have been for our family! After that, our family moved to Brewster (by Sharps in south Dart of town). After that there was a move to another part of Brewster (close to O'Briens and Hammills). After that we lived in a little house close to the school house, later moving to the south part of town where I grew up. What an adjustment this must have been for Dad? It could have been a very different life for us had not the fire occurred.
