Joe Holly Takes Own Life at Farmersburg

Joe Holly, 74, of Farmersburg, was found dead in the B&D Produce warehouse in that town Tuesday morning, May 12, by Mrs. Elmer Muller, who went into the building to get some firewood.

Local authorities were summoned, who in turn notified Sheriff Forrest Fischer and Coroner E.W. Tuecke. They investigated the death. Coroner Tuecke stated that he ended his life by hanging. No note was left to give any indication as to the reason for his act.

He roomed at the Elmer Muller house and it was reported seemed to be in good spirits the day before. No one heard him leave the house in the morning to go to the warehouse, which is behind the Muller residence.

He was born the second eldest son of John and Mary Lestina Holly Feb. 28, 1879, in Giard township. He received his education in the rural schools of Giard township, growing up on a farm east of Monona.

He was a milk hauler for a number of years. He was married to Mabel Moon Dec. 31, 1912. The couple went to farming east of Monona for four years, after which they moved to Farmersburg, where Mr. Holly entered the carpenter trade. He retired from active work a number of years ago.

He was preceded in death by his wife, who died in February 1947, his parents, five sisters and two brothers.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Will Schrader of Monona, and five brothers, Frank, Albert, George and Elmer, all of Monona, and Vencilof of Postville.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Schultz Funeral home with Rev. R.H. Steege officiating. Burial was in the Gooding cemetery.

Music was provided by Sandra Schultz, soloist, and Mrs. George Heins, organist.

Pallbearers were Tom and Donny Montgomery, Norbert and Gary Holly and Don and Allan Bacon.
