John Holly

John Holly, a well known and highly respected pioneer of Clayton County, passed away at his home on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 1933, at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 23 days. He had been in poor health for ten years.

John Holly was born in Viklidky, Bohemia. In 1869, he came with his parents to this country and settled on a farm in Giard township, which has always been his home.

In 1887, he was united in marriage with Mary Lestina, who with 14 children survive him. One child died in infancy. Those surviving are: Frank, Mrs. Anna Montgomery, John, Albert, Mrs. Rose Schroeder, Mrs. Elizabeth Lestina, Jacob, Mrs. Mathilda Lestina, George, Vencilof and Elmer, all residing near Monona, Mrs. Kate Johnson of Marquette, Mrs. Mary Fibikar of Boone and Joseph of Farmersburg; also a sister, Mrs. Anton Ballata of Pine City, Minn., a brother, Jacob of Hopkins, Minn.; 32 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's church, Monona, Iowa, at 9:30 o'clock Saturday morning. The requiem high mass celebrated by Father Donlon, the pastor. Burial was made in the Bohemian cemetery at Beulah. The pallbearers were the eight sons of Mr. Holly.

Out of town relatives attending the funeral were: Jacob Holly of Hopkins, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gibbons, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Headley, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fibikar, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Schaeffer, John Lestina and Frank Warak, all of Boone, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson and sons of Marquette; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Holly of Farmersburg and John Montgomery of McGregor.
