According to the Shankland Family Research by Albert Shankland, John Wolfe Shankland was first married to Mary 'Polly' Stoops and had 7 children: Martha Ann Brown 1823-1844; Amerdella Irene 1824-1829; Lewedy Artimisa 1825-1840; David Henry 1828-1859; Kendall T. 1829-; Benjamin F. 1832-1852; and Edward W., 1834-1912. Polly had one daughter, Elizabeth, born 1819, from her first marriage to his cousin John Shankland (son of John). Elizabeth married Jesse H. Shankland in 1837.

 After Polly died, he married Julia Ann Painter (abt 1815 - bef 1850) in 1837 and had (1 unnamed daughter); Louisa F., 1840- , and John Wesley, 1844-.  
 John then married Mariah (Locke) Stamper in 1850 and had James William Fletcher, 1850-1852; Mary Hester, abt 1852; Walker Callender, 1856- , and Catherine Belle, 1860.
 In the 1830 census for Nicholas Co., Kentucky, John W. In the 1850 census, for Nicholas County, Kentucky, John Shankland is age 49, farmer, from Delaware with $1,600 in property value. His wife Maria is 32, born Kentucky.  Also in the household are [his children by his first wife Polly Stoops] Kendall T., age 21, b.
