According to the Shankland Family Research by Albert Shankland, Edward married first George Ann Cannon (1835-1871) in 1856 and had 4 children: Charles, Thomas, James, 1865-, and David. He married Celia English (1847-1923) in 1878 and had no further children.

 According to the research of John N. Shankland, the children of Edward and Georgia were Charles W., 1857-1926; Thompson Clinton, 1862-1933; James Wesley, 1864-1954; and David Simpson, 1868-1871.
 In the 1860 census for Carlisle, Nicholas Co., Kentucky, Edward Shankland is 26, farmer, with $700 real estate and $1,080 personal; with Ann 22, and C. W. 3.  {p.26/300, dwelling #183}  Next door is his father's household.
 In the 1870 census for Weston, Nicholas Co., Kentucky, E. W. Shanklin is a farmer, 36, from Kentucky with $2500 real estate and $500 personal.  His wife Georgia is 35 and the children are Charles, 12; Thomas, 8; James, 5; and David, 1 -- all born in Kentucky.  {p.297}
  In the 1880 census for Upper Blue Lick, Nicholas Co., Edward Shankland is living next door to Mariah (Locke) Stamper Shankland.  He is age 46, a farmer from Kentucky (father Delaware, mother Kentucky). His wife Cela is 33, born Kentucky (parents Kentucky) and his sons are Clinton, 17 and James, 15  -- both born Kentucky. {p.472D}
  In the 1900 census in Carlisle, Nicholas Co., Kentucky, Edward 'Shanklin' is 56, born Apr 1834 in Kentucky (father Delaware, mother Kentucky), married 22 years, 'gardner & farmer'; and wife 'Seely' is 52, born Jan 1848 in KY (parents same) with 0 of 0 children living. {ed 108, sh. 4, l.54}
 In the 1910 census for Nicholas Co., Kentucky, Edward W. Shankland is 76, born Kentucky (father Delaware, mother Kentucky) married twice, married 33 years, with own income.  From the Carlisle Mercury News, Carlisle, Nicholas County, KY, 20 June 1912: "At his home in this city Sunday, June 16, 1912, after several months illness and old age, Mr. Edward W. Shankland, aged 78 years.  Deceased was for many years a resident of this city and was recognized as one of the best citizens.  He was a faithful member of the Methodist Church and a member of Daugherty Lodge F. & A. Masons, and was prompt in all duties  to his  fellowman.  He is survived by his widow and three sons---Jas. Shankland of Owingsville, Chas. Shankland of Lexington, and Clinton Shankland of California. Burial at Carlisle cemetery Monday after services at Methodist church by Rev.
