Mariah was the daughter of Richard Locke and Eva Katherine Fisher Callender. She first married Samuel Stamper and had 2 sons, John and Samuel. 

 In the 1870 census for Moorefield, Nicholas Co., Mariah Shanklin is living with S. H. Stamper, age 28, a farmer [probably her son Samuel].  Mariah Shanklin is 50 and her children are Walker, 12; M.H., female, 17; and C. B., female, 9. {p. 295}
 In 1880, Mariah is living in Upper Blue Lick, Nicholas Co., Kentucky, age 62; with daughter Bell age 20. {p.472D}
