Probably the Mary Shankland living with her half-brother Kendall Thompson Shankland in Steuben, Warren Co., Indiana in 1880. She is 27, born Kentucky, (father Delaware, mother Kentucky) and is keeping house for her widowed brother. {p.49a}

 According to his bio, Samuel served in the 72nd Indiana Infantry during the Civil War.
