John Alfred Allen was born on 28th May 1874 at Plymouth in Devon, son of Mary Ann Allen, formerly Harry, and her husband John Burridge Allen, a seaman in the Royal Navy. Young John appears in the 1881 census living with his mother and siblings at 11 John Street in Plymouth. Presumably his father was at sea on census night.

John has yet to be traced after 1881; there appears to have been another John Allen from Plymouth of about the same age, making it hard to tell them apart.
