Lillian Allen was born on 30th January 1872 at Plymouth in Devon, daughter of Mary Ann Harry. Lillian's father appears to have been a Royal Navy seaman named John Burridge Allen; he and Mary Ann married a couple of years later and when Lillian was baptised he was named as her father. Lillian appears in the 1881 census living with her mother and siblings at 10 John Street in Plymouth.

By 1891 Lillian had left home, and was working as an undernurse in the house of an admiral's widow at St Michael Terrace in Devonport.

Lillian's mother died in 1895, and her father died just three years later in 1898.

Also in 1898 Lillian married a haulage contractor named William Henry Thomas Doddridge. He was a widower with a young son from his first marriage. Lillian and William appear to have gone on to have another nine children together between 1898 and 1912. The 1901 census finds the family living at Elburton in the parish of Plymstock. About 1905 they moved back into Plymouth, where the 1911 census finds them living at 35 Albert Road.

William died in 1927. Lillian survived him by 34 years. She died in 1961, aged 89.
