Amelia Mary Elizabeth Veale was born on 6th February 1879 at Plymouth in Devon, daughter of Mary Ann Allen, formerly Harry, and her husband John Burridge Allen, a seaman. She was baptised the following month, alongside her two elder siblings. At the time of their baptism the family was living at 11 John Street in Plymouth. The 1881 census finds Amelia, her siblings and their mother living at 11 John Street; presumably their father was at sea on census night.
For a time in the mid 1880s the family lived at 3 Claremont Place, which was Amelia's recently widowed grandmother's home. By 1889 they had moved to 15 Wake Street in Devonport, where the family also appears in the 1891 census.
Amelia's mother died in 1895. Later that year her father married again, but he died three years later. Amelia had therefore lost both parents by the time she was nineteen.
Amelia's next sighting is in 1904, aged about 25, when she married Bertram George Veale. He was from Devonport, but they did not marry in the Plymouth area at all, but over 300 miles away in the Hull area of east Yorkshire. Why they married there is unclear. After their marriage they moved another considerable distance to Weymouth in Dorset, where they had a son in 1908. The 1911 census finds them living in a five roomed house in Weymouth and describes Bertram as a shop assistant working for a stationer and fancy book seller. They stayed in Weymouth for a few years, having a daughter there in 1918.
Their next sighting is in 1946, when they were living in Torquay, back in Devon. Bertram died there at Torbay Hospital in 1946. Amelia outlived him by seven years, in which time she returned to her native Plymouth, where she died in 1953, aged 74.
