Albert Sydney Allen was born on 13th May 1885 at Plymouth in Devon, son of Mary Ann Allen, formerly Harry, and her husband John Burridge Allen, a naval pensioner. Albert was baptised the following month, when the family's address was given as 3 Claremont Place, which was also his maternal grandmother's home. His grandmother died in 1894.

The 1891 census finds Albert living with his parents and siblings at 15 Wake Street in Devonport.

In 1895, when Albert was ten years old, his mother died. Later that year his father married again, with an Annie Maria George becoming his stepmother. In 1898 Albert's father died too, leaving him being brought up by his stepmother. The 1901 census finds them living at 15 Chapel Street in Plymouth. By this time Albert was working as a carpet layer. Ten years later Albert was living in Devonport and described as a house furnisher in the drapery business.

It has yet to be established if Albert married or had children. He appears to have died in Plymouth in 1961, aged 75.
