Christopher Irvin BIRTH 1730 Castlederg, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland DEATH 1791 (aged 60–61) Rowan County, North Carolina, USA BURIAL Third Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery Cleveland, Rowan County, North Carolina, USA
Christopher Irvin was born near Derg Bridge (Castle Derg), County Tyrone, Ireland around 1725-30. He was a son of John Irvin, Jr. (d. circa 1762) and his first wife, name unknown. John Irvin was blacksmith, married twice, and fathered 15 children. The only names of the children known to me are Christopher, John and James (youngest son of the second marriage born in 1761).
Christopher came to this country sometime around 1750, and began aquiring tracts of land in Rowan County, North Carolina. He also pursued the family occupation of being a blacksmith. He acquired 690 acres in 1760.
Christopher was twice married. His first wife was probably Jane McDowell, and they were married around 1756. His second wife was Mary, widow of Thomas Lyall, whom he married in February 1786. (Some sources say 17 Feb. others 26 Feb.) There were seven children born of the first marriage and four born of the second.
Christopher was too old to serve in the Army during the Revolution, but he was the blacksmith for the local forces. A big flat field beside the Third Creek Presbyterian Church was used as a muster ground for the army, and Christopher kept the horses shod and furnished materials and labor to the army.
The children of Christopher Irvin and his first wife (probably Jane McDowell) were Jane Irvin (1757-1803, m. Richard Graham), John Irvin (c. 1759-1809, m. Margaret Young, buried here), Margaret Irvin (1761-1822, m. Lieut. David McEwen, went to Tennessee), William Irvin (c. 1762, lived in Iredell County), Sarah Irvin (c. 1765, m. Mr. Brown), Christopher Irvin, Jr. (c. 1768-1823, m. Naomi Allison, went to Tennessee), Andrew Irvin (d. 1801 unmarried).
The children of Christopher Irvin and Mary (Mrs.) Lyall were Mary Irvin (c. 1783), George W. Irvin (c. 1785-1863, m. Rachel DeWeese)*, Thomas Irvin/Erwin (c. 1787-1845, m. Sarah DeWeese)* and Robert Irvin (c. 1789).
