John Irvin was a son of Christopher Irvin and his wife Jane McDowell (I think). His family was of Scottish orgins and had lived at Derg Bridge (Castlederg) Ulster, Ireland for a time. His father, Christopher Irvin came to this country sometime in the early 1750s and established a farm in Rowan County, NC. He, like his son John, was a farmer and a blacksmith.

John married Margaret Young (1763-1839)in 1786. She was a daughter of Captain Samuel Young and his wife Margaret McKnight. The Irvin and Young families were members of the Third Creek Presbyterian Church. While John's wife and father in law and several children have marked tombstones here, I've not seen a record for John's stone, though I am pretty sure he would be here.

John wrote his will on 10 September 1809, and it was probated in the November Court term, so he probably died in either September or October. (The will states he was "sick and very weak in body...")

John and Margaret had the following children, mentioned in his will:

    1. Jean (Jane)
    2. Christopher
    3. Polly (Mary)
    4. Sarah
    5. Peggy (Margaret) she may possibly have been Margaret Boyd Irvin (1796-1865) who married Jonathan DeWeese (1785-1841) of Mecklenburg County.
