Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

• 230 acres, etc., in Rockingham County [then in Augusta County], on the waters of Linwell's Creek and Muddy Creek, which was first granted by patent, dated 27th June, 1764, to William Sample and by him conveyed to said Thomas Jackson by deeds, 15th May, 1770. [From Chalkley's Record listed below]

• Page 304.--16th May, 1770. William Samples and Sarah ( ) to the Rev. Thomas Jackson, £75, 230 acres patented to William, 27th June, 1764, on drafts of Linvell's and Muddy Creek. Delivered: Thomas Jackson, 29th December, 1770.

• Page 406.--17th August, 1773. William Samples and Sarah ( ) to George Kersner, on Brock's Creek, 235 acres patented to Adam Hoverstick, 7th July, 1763. Teste: Henry Runyon, Obediah ( ) Muncy.

• Page 130.-- 1774 Adam Hoverstick of Culpeper to George Kersner, patent to Adam 7 July 1763 (just after the end of the French and Indian War) and conveyed by him to William Samples, 18 Aug 1770, and William Samples to George Kersner, 17 Aug 1773. Adam Hoverstick was an alien and foreigner when he conveyed to William Samples and continued so until 16 Mar 1774 when he was naturalized.

Gregg, Margaret McGlaughlan, David Nelson, Pat Frazier, John Cunningham, Robt. Ralston, Johnston Hill, John Cravens, Jesse Harrison, Bryce Russell, Robt. McGarry, John Dunkle, John Montgomery. Paid John Wright, Ro. Minnis (for whiskey), Sarah Stevenson (for whiskey for vendue); paid Wm. Gibson, Adam Harper, James Dyer.

• Page 421.--13th June, 1776. Samuel Sample's will--To wife, Ann; to son, Samuel; to son, Moses; to sons, a division; to son William's son, William, an equal legatee; to son, Robert; to grandson, Thomas Randall. Executors, sons Robert and Moses. Teste: Andrew Erwin, John Brown, Mary Black. Proved, 20th August, 1776, by Erwin and Brown. Executors qualify.

• Vol. 1 - DECEMBER, 1790. - Inquisition from Escheator of Rockingham. This indenture of an inquisition taken and made in pursuance of an Act, entitled an Act concerning Escheators at the Court House of Rockingham County, on Tuesday, the 26th day of July, in the year of our Lord, 1796, of and concerning a certain piece, etc., of land commonly known and called by the name of the late Rev. Thomas Jackson, deceased, containing 230 acres, etc., in Rockingham County, on the waters of Linwell's Creek and Muddy Creek, which was first granted by patent, dated 27th June, 1764, to William Sample and by him conveyed to said Thomas Jackson by deeds, 15th May, 1770. Between Mathew Gambill, Escheator, and James Curry, William Herring, Benjamin Harrison, John Rice, Reuben Harrison, John Herdman, George Baxter, Richard Ragan, Samuel McWilliams, Jonathan Shipman, Benjamin Smith, James Burgess, George Sittes, Thomas Shanklin, John Lincoln. William Cravens, jurors, who, etc., do say that the aforesaid Thomas Jackson was, in his lifetime, and the time of his death, seized, etc., of the aforesaid tract, etc. That he died intestate and no person has claimed the land either as lineal or collateral heir and it is escheatable. Signed by all the jurors.
