Information on William Montgomery

General Notes: From Montgomery and James of Southwest Virginia, by James Trimble page 336:

  • "William Montgomery was born about 1723 near Donegal Ireland and moved to America with his family about 1733. In 1746 he moved from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Catawba Creek in Augusta, (now Botetourt) county Virginia. He served in the French and Indian War for which he received 50 acres in 1780. On May 21, 1765 he was constable on Reed Creek in present Wythe county, Virginia, and on August 1, 1771 bought 135 acres near Buffalo Lick on Reed Creek from his brother John Montgomery for 100 pounds. He and his wife Margaret sole the land on which they lived to James McCorkle for 1,000 pounds on June 31, 1779.

This source goes on to state that probably lived on a 12 acre tract in Montgomery (now Wythe) county Virginia and died there in about 1785 or 86. He left a will now lost, and probated on Feb. 22, 1786. His wife Margaret probably moved to present day Montgomery county, Tennessee with her son John. This part needs more investigation as this may be the same William mentioned in the Historic Families of Kentucky who followed Benjamin Logan to Kentucky in 1779 and mentioned as being killed by Indians in 1781. (See also the Historic Families of Kentucky pages 133-134 in the section on the Logan's)

I'm related to the William Montgomery Sr. who was the father in Law of Benjamin Logan. He did die in the attack on February 27th 1781 while it's possible he could be related to this William Montgomery, he is not this one, his wife was named Jane. There is confusion because William Sr. had a son named John Montgomery but he also died in the attack.
