Catherine Slates' grandparents were Frederick (1759-1830) and Margaret Roller Slates (1764-1828) Isaac Slates and sisters Sarah and Elizabeth Shawver had Frederick and Margaret as their great grandparents. Catherine, Isaac, Sarah and Elizabeth married siblings William, Christina, Jacob and Emanuel Colar

    In the 1850 census, William was living in Loudon Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio. He was listed as William Colar a laborer age 25 born in Ohio, his wife Catherine age 21 born in Ohio, their son Harvey age 1 born in Ohio.

    His obituary in the Carroll Free Press, Carrollton, Ohio, Wednesday, February 9, 1881.

    Sudden Death--Last week Mr. William Colar of Loudon Township, went down near Port Washington, Tuscarawas County, to visit some friends, and whilst there, on Friday morning last was found dead in the bed. Mr. Colar was a man of fifty-five or sixty years of age, with a vigorous constitution. His remains were brought home last Sabbath, and interred in a Kilgore graveyard.

    William's will:

    In the name of the Benevolent Father of all, I William Colar of the Twp. of Loudon and the County of Carroll, Ohio do make and publish this my last will and testament.
    Item 1st - I give and advise to my beloved wife Catherine Colar in _______ of the ______ the home farm containing one hundred acres and the Taylor farm containing eighty-seven acres, with all the personal property money and credit that may belong to me at the time of my decease, to use and control the same as she ______ best an being as she remained my widow, providing she pays the amount to my heirs that I may hereafter specify in this my will.

    Item 2nd -- I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah Jane Colar after the decease of my wife Catherine Colar, the home farm containing one hundred acres to be decided to her and her heirs providing she pays my grand-daughter Clarinda whom I have raised the sum of six hundred dollars.

    Item 3rd -- I give and devise to my daughter Mary E. Crumrine after the decease of my wife Catherine Colar the Taylor farm containing eighty seven acres, to be decided to her and her heirs by her the said Mary E. Crumrine paying Clarinda my grand-daughter, whom I have raised the sum of four hundred dollars.

    Item 4th -- I give and devise to my daughter Martha E. Colar the Forty six acres lying south of the Taylor farm and sixteen hundred dollars in money, I devise my executor to sell the forty six acres above described and take the money raising from the sale of said land and with the sixteen hundred dollars and buy eighty or one hundred acres of good land - and have the same decided to my daughter, Martha E. Colar, and her Hiers, I also devise that my executor shall not and control the said forty six acres of land to the best advantage until such time that sale can be made of the same and with the sixteen hundred dollars be invested in the eighty or one hundred acres as aforesaid, I also devise that my executor shall control the eighty or one hundred acres until after the decease of my wife Catherine Colar.

    Item 5th -- I give and devise to my daughter Drusilla Philpott the sum of sixteen hundred dollars to be paid out of my estate by the executor within one year after my decease.

    Item 6th -- I give and devise all that may remain of my chattel and personal property after the decease of my wife Catherine Colar with the exception of all meaning apparel and bed clothing, to my daughters and granddaughter Clarinda whom I have raised sharing equally with the rest the said chattel property and personal property to be sold and equally divided as aforesaid.

    Item 7th -- I give and devise all meaning apparel and bed clothing to my daughters and granddaughter Clarinda equally among them to be divided with out and sale or appraisement.

    Item 8th -- I hereby nominate and appoint Catherine Colar my wife sole executor of this my last will and testament allowing her to compromise and adjust released and discharge all my claims and to settle all my business. I also appoint Isaac Slates as assistant while my wife Catherine Colar may remain living and then I nominate and appoint, Isaac Slates my sole executor, to settle and just compromise and discharge all my claims, and to settle all business that may remain unsettle at the decease of my wife Catherine Colar. I devise that there be no appraisement and sale of my bed, clothing and meaning apparel and that the court of probate direct the omission of the same in pursuances of the statute made and provided.

Richards, both in London Township, Carroll County; Mrs. Drusilla Philpott, in Tecumseh, Johnson Co., Neb., and Mrs. Martha E. Crumrine, in Perry Township. Carroll Co., Ohio. Our subject and her husband, after their marriage, took up their residence in Loudon Township, on the farm now owned by Mrs. Colar. Mr. Colar, at the time of his death, owned 232 acres of land; in his political convictions he was a Democrat.

William md Catherine Slates, dau. of Conrad, a native of Loudon Co., Va. b 11-25-1798 who md in that State Hannah Funk b in Mad., 10-31-1800 and had 12 ch. Wm. & Catherine had: Harvey, Mary Crumrine, Sarah Richards, Drusilla Philpott (res.Tecumseh,Nebr.) & Martha Crumrine.
