About the Rutledge Family in Augusta County, VA
The patriarch's name of the Rutledge Family of Augusta County, VA is unproven. He may have come with his family to America before 1743, when records show his sons John and James being Indian traders in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania:
- On April 11, 1743, Thomas Story and John Rutledge were traders (Indian) in Chester County, Pa, and on that date executed their bond to William Blythe, of Lancaster County, Pa. Both Thomas Story and John Rutledge removed to Augusta County, Va., prior to 1750. John Patton was a witness to the bond. Blyth vs. Story etc. Court papers 390.
- James Rutledge was a resident of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, November 5, 1741, As a trader (Indian) , on February 28, 1744, he was still in Lancaster. On the date first mentioned, he executed his deed to Robert Dunning, of Pennsborough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and to Samuel Blunston, of Hempfield, of the same county. He died in Augusta County, Virginia prior to November, 1750.

Mr. Rutledge is refered to as "aged father" as named in the will of his son, John Rutledge, Jr., which was written on 17 Oct. 1751 in Augusta County:
- Page 390.-17th October, 1751. John Rutledge's will--Aged father: nephew, George Rutledge, was partner with James Bell in a tract of land; 400 acres on Long Glade conveyed to them by Thos. Gilespy; brother, Wm. Rutledge; brother, Thomas Rutledge; sister, Catherine Marshal; sister, Jean Rutledge. Executors, Thomas Rutledge and James Bell. Teste: William Armstrong, John Flood, Hugh Means. Proved, 26th November, 1751, by all witnesses, and Thomas Rutledge qualifies executor, with sureties Wm. Thompson, Wm. Preston.
It is likely that the "aged father" Mr. Rutledge died sometime after the above-mentioned will of his son John, but before the following listing of John Rutledge's administration, where he is not named:
- Page 327.--21st May, 1756. Wm. Rutlidge, Thos. Rutledge, Wm. Marshall, Jean ( ) Rutledge, heirs and legatees of Jno. Rutledge, to James Bell. Receipt for £60 which Bell was required to pay in lieu of land held by Jno. Rutledge and James Bell from Thos. Gilespy.
