Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

George Rutledge's land (Beverley Manor SE, 440 acres, 1750) as shown on the map meticulously drawn by J.R. Hildebrand, cartographer. This map is copyrighted©, used by permission of John Hildebrand, son of J.R. Hildebrand, April, 2009. (Note: The 440 acre tract granted from William Beverley to George Rutledge in 1750 does not appear on the J.R. Hildebrand Map. Apparently, this land was originally granted to Thomas Henderson in 1738 (originally 391 acres), but on March 31st, 1750, Henderson either gave or sold the tract back to William Beverley in the following transaction):

• Page 823.--31st March, 1750. Thomas Henderson, planter, of Albemarle, to Wm. Beverley, 391 acres, in Beverley Manor; corner Jno. Davison, Christie's Creek, Thos. Black's line. Teste: Richard Pringle, Jno. Rutlidge.

Just four days later, William Beverley again granted the same land (plus 49 adjoining acres) to George Rutledge in the following record:

Long's mill, thence to James Alexander's fence, with these workers: James Armstrong, George Rutlidge, Thomas Rutlidge, James Caldwell, James Armstrong. James Frain, William Robb, John Christian, James Alexander, John Black, John Wilson, Anthony Black, Wm. Wright, and Wm. and John Robinson.

• Page 339.--10th April, 1761. William Johnston to John Davies (Davis), £__, 5 sh., 269 acres in Beverley Manor on Black's Run, a branch of Christian's Creek; cor. said Black's land, William Henderson's line, George Rutledge's line; cor. said Rutledges and James Armstrong's; said Black's cor., two white oaks at an iron mine. Teste: Walter Davies, Thomas Rutlidge, John Cunningham.

• Page 611.--12th May, 1764. John Davis and Jane to Joshua and Mirian Cloyd, £30, 269 acres in Beverley Manor; corner Thomas Black's land, William Henderson's line, George Rutledge's line; corner James Armstrong's line, oaks at an iron mine.
