Thomas Turnham's origins have yet to be established. One possibility is that he was the Thomas son of William and Elizabeth Turnham baptised at Totternhoe in Bedfordshire on 24th September 1748.

His first confirmed sighting is on 23rd November 1770 when he married Mary Purton at Totternhoe. Between 1771 and 1791 they had ten children baptised at Totternhoe, although their eldest daughter Rebecca died aged eight years old. They named one of their later daughters Rebecca too.

Mary has yet to be traced for certain after the baptism of her youngest daughter in 1791; there are possible burials for her in 1795, 1800 or 1809, any or none of which could be her. Thomas died in 1804, being buried on 7th October at Totternhoe.
