Mary Turnham was baptised on 14th March 1773 at Totternhoe in Bedfordshire, daughter of Mary Turnham, formerly Purton, and her husband Thomas Turnham. The family was often recorded in the registers as Turner or Turney, although Mary's father Thomas was literate and signed his name as Turnham.

There are at least three 'Mary Turner' burials at Totternhoe with no further information to help identify each person, in 1795, 1800, and 1809. It seems likely (albeit not certain) that Mary and her mother would be two of these three people buried.
