Mary Purton's origins have yet to be established. Her first confirmed sighting is on 23rd November 1770 when she married Thomas Turnham at Totternhoe in Bedfordshire. Between 1771 and 1791 they had ten children baptised at Totternhoe, although their eldest daughter Rebecca died aged eight years old. They named one of their later daughters Rebecca too.

Mary has yet to be traced for certain after the baptism of her youngest daughter in 1791.
