Information on Thomas Paxton, Jr.

Thomas Paxton, Jr., undoubtedly born in Ireland about 1720, was not yet in his teens when the family came to America and settled in Pennsylvania. After coming to the Valley of Virginia, he married Rebecca Robinson, whose brother Matthew had married Thomas’ sister Betty. These Robinsons were descended from one John Robinson who had immigrated to America from Cleasby, Yorkshore, England, with his wife, the former Elizabeth Potter, daughter of Christopher Potter, of Cleasby. In colonial Virginia, the Robinsons had intermarried with the Braxton, Wormley, Berkeley, and other prominent families. John Robinson, the speaker to the House of Burgesses, was of this line.

To Thomas and Rebecca Robinson Paxton a son was born, March 16, 1766, and to him was given the name of Samuel, a traditional name of the Paxtons. On August 8, 1791, about a year or more before the death of his grandfather, young Samuel Paxton married Catherine Atkinson. After his father’s death, he purchased the interest of this brothers and sister in the homestead and there he and Catherine lived to the day of their deaths.
