• Vol. 2 - BOOK MARKED "RECORDS." - Page 159--John McCroskey, aged over 90, deposes, 1806, the land when he first knew it was sixty years ago, and was called Paxton's land. Thos. Taylor, son-in-law of Thos. Paxton, was the first settler. Samuel Paxton, aged 73, deposes, ditto. Son of Thos. Paxton. About a year in the spring before Thomas came there had been a battle with the Indians, in which John McDowell fell. Taylor's wife's name was Elizabeth. James Buchanan, aged 65, deposes, ditto. He was bom October or November, 1739. Jno. McDowell was killed three years and five months after his birth. James McCoon, aged 74 years, deposes, ditto; has known the land 58 years.

Thomas Paxton, the founder of the family, had another son whose name was Samuel; he was born in 1733 and only a lad of eight years when his father migrated from Ireland to America. Very little is known of this Samuel Paxton. A deposition he made, April 5, 1806, in Lexington, gives some interesting data. In it, he says, that his father, Thomas Paxton, now deceased, came to Borden's Grant and purchased land and returned to Pennsylvania for his family. Too, he makes mention of Thomas Taylor who married Elizabeth Paxton, his sister.

The name of Samuel Paxton's wife is not of record, but it is known that he was the father of two sons--there may have been more children. The elder of the boys named Thomas in honor of his grandfather, was born in Rockbridge County, January 10, 1764. His wife was Martha Steele, whose father was Robert Steele, said to have been the son of Andrew; she was born in 1764. Although only a boy when the Revolutionary War broke out, he served one of the Rockbridge military companies as the drummer, marching with it to eastern Virginia and giving the roll at the siege of Yorktown. Before Thomas Paxton died in 1846, in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Samuel Paxton (1733-1806) served, 1779, in the Virginia militia in Capt. Samuel Higginbotham's company attached to the regiment commanded by Colonel Christian. He was born in Augusta County, Va., or in Ireland.
