Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

• Thomas Millsaps [from the Chalkley's records listed below] acquired a tract of 400 acres prior to February 1747, which was located between Smith's Creek and Limestone Ridge, adjoining a tract belonging to Andrew Bird. (Note: the original deed to Thomas Millsaps does not appear to be contained in Chalkley's transcriptions [Chalkley did not transcribe all records], but are likely in the original Augusta County records).

Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:

• Page 86.--14th February, 1750-51. Thomas Milsaps, weaver, to Wm. McGee, farmer, where Wm. now lives, Lime Stone Ridge, to a cornerstone planted for that purpose. Teste: Suen Rambo. (Note: a land record in 1770 [listed below between William Millsaps, son of Thomas, Sr. and William McDowell] shows that the tract conveyed to William McGee contained 100 acres, part of Thomas Millsaps original 400-acre tract).

• 114 acres of Thomas Millsaps 400 acre tract were conveyed to John Dilling (per the 1770 land record below [listed below between William Millsaps, son of Thomas, Sr. and William McDowell].

Will of Thomas Millsaps

• Page 368.--30th October, 1759. Thomas Millsap's will--To wife, Mary; to sons, Robert and Thomas; to daughters, Elinor and Mary; to daughter, Jean Macgee; to daughter, Elizabeth Dillen; to sons, Joseph and William, Joseph to have "Robbin's Cabin" joining William Carrol. Teste: Andrew Bird, John Phillips. Proved, 20th May. 1760, by the witnesses. Executors qualified, with Mounce Bird, Wm. Magee.

• Page 428.--7th June, 1760. Thomas Milsap's appraisement, by Michl. Waren, Abraham Bird.

• Page 239.--19th August, 1761. John Skeen's bond (with Michael Warren), as guardian (appointed) to Eleanor Milsap, orphan of Thos Milsap.

• Vol. 1 - AUGUST 19, 1761. - (58) John Skean appointed guardian of Elianor Milsap.

Processioning List of 1756

• Page 255.--11th February, 1746-7. Robert McCay to James Robinson. £40; 400 acres on Linwell's Creek, whereon the said Robinson lives being lot No. 1, part of 7,009 acres, &c.; mouth of Linwell's Creek and North River. Teste: G. Jones, Peter Scholl, Thomas T. Milseph (Milsaps). Poved by all, 21st May, 1747.

• Page 13.--4th September, 1747. John Millar (Millan) and wife Hannah to Francis Hughes, late of Lancaster County, Penna., part of 400 acres patented to Thomas Rutherford, of Frederick County, and by him sold to James Gill, late of Augusta; other part in possession of Thomas Moore Teste: Mathew Skeen, Thos. Milsap. Delivered to Abra. (?) Bird, January, 1754.

• Page 85.--24th October, 1747. John Taylor's Inventory by Thomas Looker, Wm. Carrel, Thomas Milsap. To an improvement of land sold by his widow, now administratrix.

• Vol. 2 - Page 49.--16th February, 1748: A mulatto, Christopher Roorrey, bound to Thomas Milsap until 31 years old.

• Page 279.--6th April, 1753. James Downing and Mary to John Love, 1753, on Smith Creek; corner John Love's land near land of John Davison, 175 acres. Teste: Thomas Millsaps,

• Page 38.--19th February, 1769. William McGee and Jane ( ) to William McDowel, 160, between the Timber Ridge and Smith's Creek, corner Valentine Sevear, line of Andrew Byrd's land; Borden's line; Thomas Millsap's line, on the side of the Limestone Ridge, 158 acres by patent. Teste: Andrew Byrd, Edward Sampson, Jos. Wat. Peace. (Note: William McGee was the son-in-law of Thomas Millsaps. He married his daughter Jean Millsaps).
