Sarah Miles was baptised on 3rd January 1796 at Broadway in Worcestershire, daughter of Elizabeth Miles, formerly Rastall, and her husband, Stephen Miles, a slater and plasterer. Sarah grew up in Broadway. She appears to have been the second of seven children, although her elder brother died when he was six years old in 1799, making Sarah effectively the eldest child.

On 2nd November 1820, aged 24, Sarah married a painter and glazier named William Keyte. He was 23 and had been born at Chatham in Kent, where his father had been based whilst serving in the army. William’s father was originally from Shipston-on-Stour, about eleven miles east of Broadway, and the family presumably returned to the Shipston area sometime after his father retired from the army in 1809.

Sarah and William had six children in Broadway between 1822 and 1838. The 1841 census finds the family living on High Street in Broadway. Sarah was working as a dressmaker. Sometime between 1841 and 1851, the family moved to the nearby market town of Evesham. Both the 1851 and 1861 censuses find Sarah and William living on Port Street in the Bengeworth area of Evesham. In 1861 they had their daughter Elizabeth living with them with her daughter.

By 1871, the family had moved back to Broadway. In the later censuses, no occupation was given for Sarah, whilst William continued to work as a painter and glazier. By 1881, William described himself as ‘formerly painter and glazier’.

Sarah died at Broadway on 19th September 1881, aged 85. Her cause of death was given as paralysis and debility. William outlived her by just over three years and died in 1884, aged 87.

This baptism has been linked to the Sarah Miles who married William Keyte in 1820 on the basis that it matches the date and place of birth given by the adult Sarah Keyte in the censuses, plus in the 1841 census Sarah's son Richard was living with a Stephen Miles who was brother to the Sarah baptised in 1796 and next door to Stephen and Sarah's parents, Stephen and Elizabeth.
