Facts and Events
Stephen Miles was baptised on 11th December 1763 at Broadway in Worcestershire, son of Ann Miles, formerly White, and her husband Stephen Miles. The couple had married just two months before Stephen’s baptism. Stephen was the eldest of nine children. Stephen’s mother died in 1790. On 19th July 1792, aged 28, Stephen married Elizabeth Rastall at Broadway. They went on to have seven children between 1793 and 1808, all baptised at Broadway. Their first three children were baptised in Broadway’s Anglican parish church, but the later four children were all baptised at the newly opened Independent Chapel in Broadway. The baptisms of the children at the Independent Chapel record that Stephen worked as a slater and plasterer. Their eldest son died when only six years old in 1799. Stephen’s father died in 1802. The 1841 census finds Stephen and Elizabeth both in their seventies, living on the High Street in Broadway. Stephen was described as being of independent means. They were living next door to their son (another Stephen) and grandson Richard Keyte. Elizabeth died later in 1841, when she was said to be 71 years old. Stephen outlived her by nine years and died in 1850, aged 87. References
