Richard Keyte was baptised on 13th July 1823 at Broadway in Worcestershire, son of a dressmaker called Sarah Keyte, formerly Miles, and her husband William Keyte, a plumber and glazier.
The 1841 census finds Richard living next door to his Miles grandparents, working as a journeyman slater with his uncle Stephen Miles.
On 5th April 1848, aged 24, Richard married Mary Dingley Castle (formerly Lies), a widow from the nearby town of Evesham, who had a six-year-old daughter, Emma, from her first marriage.
Richard and Mary had seven children together in Broadway between 1849 and 1869. By the time their youngest daughter was born, Mary was 47 years old. Somewhat confusingly, Mary and Richard’s youngest daughter was called Emma Mary, when Mary already had a daughter called Emma from her first marriage. Whilst their elder children were baptised into the Church of England, from 1857 they started using Broadway’s Catholic Church, and the family appears to have converted to Catholicism.
Each census from 1851 to 1891 finds Mary and Richard living at either China Square or Springfield Road - quite likely they lived at the corner of those two streets. Richard worked as a slater and plasterer, whilst Mary was a boot and shoe binder.
Richard’s son John married in 1871, and Richard’s first grandchild was born the following year. He had at least 39 grandchildren born in his lifetime, all born in or near Broadway, although some died young.
Richard’s mother died in 1881, and his father died in 1884.
Richard died on 13th December 1895, aged 72. His will, written a couple of weeks before his death, left Mary two cottages in Broadway with gardens, outbuildings and an orchard. Richard’s will describes one cottage as being in his own occupation, and the other being in the occupation of his son Walter William. Richard was buried at St Saviour’s Catholic Church in Broadway. Mary outlived him by nearly 20 years, reaching the age of 94.
