John Keyte was born in 1849 at Broadway in Worcestershire, son of a boot binder called Mary Dingley Keyte, formerly Lies, and her husband Richard Keyte, a slater and plasterer. John was the first of seven child that his parents had together, although his mother had been married before and John had an older half-sister from his mother's first marriage.

John appears in the 1851 census living living with his parents and half-sister at Church Street in Broadway. By 1861 they had moved to nearby China Square and John was working as a plasterer's labourer, beginning to follow his father's trade.

On 21st January 1871, aged about 22, John married Mary Wilkes in the neighbouring village of Childswickham. They returned to Broadway after their marriage. They had nine children between 1872 and 1891, although two died when less than a year old. Each census from 1881 to 1901 finds them living on the High Street in Broadway. John worked as a slater and plasterer, whilst Mary worked as a gloveress.

John's father died in 1895.

The 1911 census finds John and Mary living back at Childswickham.

John's mother died in 1915.

John died in 1923, aged 74. He and Mary had been married for about 52 years. Mary survived him by thirteen years.
