Facts and Events
Ruth and Chester were divorced in about 1933, and then shared the children. He had them during the school year, and she had them weekends and summers, and some winters when she took them to Lake Worth, FL, and entered them in local schools. In 1942, while living at 19 Lakeview Road in E. Weymouth, MA, and after several ventures with her own filling station, antique store, and real estate business (unknowningly unlicensed!), she joined the Army Nurse Corps, where she served in New Guinea and Leyte in the Philippines. Her book "Lady With the Flashlight" about her war experiences is on file with the Memorial to Women in Military Service for America, Arlington National Cemetery, and is also in the collection of the Brockton Public Library, Brockton, MA.. After WWII she became a traveling saleswoman for children's clothing, covering New Jersey and living in Spring Valley and Montclair, NJ, at various times. She is also featured in the book "They Called Them Angels - American Military Nurses of World War II," Kathi Jackson, Praeger Publishers, Westport, CT, 2000 which contains numerous excerpts from Lt. Claff's memoirs. |
