George and Edna lived for many years at 14 Chestnut St., Spring Valley, NY. He was an engineer for the Erie Railroad, and used to blow his whistle when passing his daughter Maude's house at 4 Van Orden Ave. in Spring Valley. He loved to play the horses, and often hid from company behind the front door to place his bets. When being carried away with his heart attack in 1950, he handed his trusty railroad watch to Edna and told her to take care of it. In has last days, he was a bus dispatcher in downtown Spring Valley.

All read and write, and speak English. All are white.

OBITUARY – Orangetown Telegram, Pearl River, NY September 15, 1950 Page 3 George W. Wallace, Sr. George W. Wallace, Sr., retired railroad engineer and a resident of Spring Valley for more than a half century, died suddenly last Thursday afternoon in the Good Samaritan Hospital, Suffern. Siezed with a heart attack late Wednesday night, he was taken to the hospital in a private ambulance and failed to rally from the sudden siezure. Mr. Wallace was 81 years of age. The veteran engineer, who retired from the New Jersey and New York Railroad on November 1, 1939 after fifty years of service, has been active ever since his retirement. Mr. Wallace was well known to local bus pasengers, having been employed in the Spring Valley terminal of Rockland Coaches, Inc.' for the past seven years. The day of his last Illness he closed the bus office at 10 p. m. and had Max Klein, local taxi owner; take him to his home, complaining that he did not feel well. Dr. Julius Pomerants was called and ordered his removal to the hospital. George Wallace was born at Fishkill Plains, Dutchess County, on July 28. 1869. While still a boy he went to live with his grandfather, also George Wallace, at Hillsdale, N. J. He secured a job in the New Jersey and New York shops as an apprentice on September 1, 1889. Shop life was too quiet for him and young Wallace soon began riding on the locomotives whenever he was given an opportunity. He soon started firing and was given his first job as a fireman on October 13, 1889. He was made an engineer in 1892. Meanwhile he had been firing on a steam shovel operated by the company at Cherry Hill, now North Hackensack and at Hillsdale Manor, where material was taken use to use for fill in the project of double tracking the railroad. He also operated the steam shovel on the Greenwood Lake Division and other points in the Erie system, first as fireman and later as an engineer. When the shovel was not in operation he worked on the locomotives. Mr., Wallace was married on December 23, 1895 to Miss Edna Radney of Spring Valley and five years ago the couple held open house at their residence on Chestnut Street for relatives and friends on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. The Wallace family has lived In Spring Valley since that time except for a brief residence In Haverstraw, made necessary by Mr. Wallace's railroad run for that period. Mr. Wallace owned one of the first automobiles in Spring Valley. Built like an elevated pony cart, entrance was effected through a rear door. Mr. Wallace wee a charter member Of Athelatane Lodge. No 839 F. and A M , a member of Amity Lodge No 189(?), I O.O.F. and Spring Valley Hook and Ladder Company. He also held membership In the Brotherhood Of Locomotive Engineers and Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers. Surviving are his wife Edna: two daughters Mrs. Ruth Claff and Mrs. Maude Sidgmore; and a son Edwin E. Wallace, all of Spring Valley. Six grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive. Services were conducted Saturday night by the Brotherhood, the Masons and Odd Fellows. Members of Rockland Hook and Ladder Company, of whom Edwin Wallace is a past president, paid their respects Friday night, while members of Spring Valley Hook and Ladder Company paid their respects Saturday night. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the (can’t read) Funeral Home. Rev. Charles C. Tibbett of the Spring Valley Methodist Church conducted these services.
