Patty graduated from Northfield School for Girls in MA, attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School briefly, and then in 1944 followed her mother into the armed services in World War II. Too young for the WAACs, she joined the Canadian Women's Army Corps, where she met Jeff in Kitchener, Ontario. They moved to Vancouver, where Jeff lost his position with the East India Tea Company when India became independent. They withstood tough times but managed to raise five children and a number of horses.
